The York University Lions men's hockey team lost a narrow battle to the Waterloo Warriors with a 2-1 overtime defeat at Columba IceField in Waterloo, Ont., on Saturday night (Nov. 5).
Â
Most of the game's action took place in the first period as both Waterloo and York scored their lone regulation goals in the opening frame. Waterloo struck first at 10:58 when Phillip Fife scored off the passes of Tommy Tsicos and Cam Nicoll.
Â
It wouldn't take long for the Lions to answer as
Bryce Milson (Miramichi, N.B.) put the puck past Waterloo goaltender Mike Morrison to even the score less than five minutes later.
Tyler Mort (Keswick, Ont.) and
Shayne Rover (Newmarket, Ont.) were credited with the assists.
Â
Moving into the second period gridlocked in a 1-1 tie each team would have to find a way to separate from the other. Waterloo tried to separate themselves by creating 10 shots on goal compared to the Lions five. Neither team would be able to finish in the net and the game would move into the third period with a 1-1 tie.
Â
The final period of regulation would remain close as each team tried to match one another's best scoring attempts. The shot tally would be extremely close with Waterloo totaling seven and York totaling eight. Three periods of play would not be enough to determine a winner so the game would continue in overtime.
Â
In overtime the Warriors would execute quickly and efficiently in York's zone. Cam Wind ended the game exactly three minutes in when he scored off of two quick pass from Eric Diodati and Mike Moffat.
Â
The Lions still picked up a point in the OUA West standings but dropped to 6-3-1 and are now second in the division with 13 points. Their next game will take place on Friday (Nov. 11) when they return home to Canlan Ice Sports to face the UQTR Patriotes beginning at 7pm.
