The York University Lions women's volleyball team travelled to Hamilton, Ont., on Saturday night (Nov. 5) to try to continue their undefeated streak but the McMaster Marauders were prepared for the powerful attack and took the victory in three sets.
Â
In the first set of the match the Lions would try to replicate their performance from the prior night when they swept the Nipissing Lakers in three games. McMaster proved to be a greater foe and would take no time to start causing problems for the Lions. The Lions got caught out of place a few times and were not able to recover from the Marauders accurate hits. The Marauders would go on to win the set by a score of 25-12.
Â
The second set had a similar flow as the first, where the Lions would show brief bright spots and then soon lose their momentum.
Celeste Witzell (Kitchener, Ont.) did her best to keep the momentum going with her six hits in the match while
Kayla Clennon (Stouffville, Ont.) sacrificed her body to give her teammates chances to continue rallying with seven digs. The second set concluded with a final score of 25-11 for the Marauders.
Â
The final set of the match displayed the Lions unyielding fight as they recorded their highest total score for the game. When the Lions showed their ability to string together plays they looked like a team that was capable of beating McMaster. The ability to score was shown by
Melissa Smillie (White Rock, Ont.) who recorded four kills in the match. The final score of the set was 25-15 in favor of the Marauders.
Â
With the loss the Lions now move to 2-1 on the season. They will set out on the road next weekend when they travel to the Mattamy Athletic Centre to play the Ryerson Rams on Saturday evening (Nov. 12) at 6pm. The Lions will return home on Saturday, Nov. 26 when they will face the Queen's Gaels. Â
