The York University Lions women's hockey team was defeated by a score of 4-1 in the back end of a home-and-home series with the No. 5 nationally-ranked Guelph Gryphons on Wednesday evening (Nov. 9) at Canlan Ice Sports.
Â
The Gryphons also edged out a win in their meeting last week, getting past the Lions 4-3 in overtime. They have now won five games in a row, while the Lions have dropped four straight.
Â
It was the Lions who got on the board first in the contest thanks to a goal by
Justine Treadwell () just 3:09 into the game. Their lead was short-lived, however, as the Gryphons levelled the score less than 30 seconds later on a tally by Kaitlin Lowy.
Â
Those two quick goals represented the only scoring of the first period.
Â
Seven minutes into the second, Lowy got in on the action again with her second of the game to give the Gryphons their first lead, and Guelph carried its 2-1 lead into the third.
Â
In the final frame the Gryphons added to their lead with a pair of goals in a 90-second span, first by Stephanie Gava at 8:27 and then by Claire Merrick at 9:58 to round out the scoring.
Â
Reigning U Sports player of the year Valerie Lamenta made 30 saves to earn the victory in net, while her York counterpart,
Lauren Dubie (London, Ont.) stopped 31 in the loss.
Â
Up next for the Lions is a road game against the Windsor Lancers in Windsor, Ont., on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 12) beginning at 4pm.
