The York University Lions men's basketball team suffered an 87-65 loss to the Guelph Gryphons in their final game of 2016 at the W. F. Mitchell Athletics Centre in Guelph, Ont., on Saturday night.

The Gryphons used a dominant first half to pull away from the Lions, outscoring them 18-12 in the first quarter and 24-12 in the second for a commanding 42-24 advantage at the half. The Lions played a much better third quarter, putting up 19 points to the Gryphons' 18, but it wasn't nearly enough to close the gap and the Gryphons went on to the lopsided victory.

The Lions have now lost four in a row and will carry a 2-4 record into the December break, while the Gryphons improved to 3-3.

Jayden Frederick (Scarborough, Ont.) continued his tremendous sophomore season with 18 points on 9-of-17 shooting and he also added a team-high seven rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block. He is currently fifth in OUA scoring with 18.7 points per game.

Julio Vazquez (Toronto) came in off the bench and had his best game of the season with 17 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor, and he also put up three rebounds and one assist.

Guelph's leading scorer was Ahmed Haroon with a game-high 22 points, while Kingslee D'Silva had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lions are now off for the rest of December and will return to action on Friday, Jan. 6 when they head to Windsor, Ont., for a game against the Lancers. Tip-off is set for 8pm.
