BADGERS TOP LIONS IN SECOND OVERTIME

The York University Lions women's hockey team came back and forced overtime in Sunday's (Feb.14) matchup with the Brock Badgers, but fell 2-1 in the second overtime period at Canlan Ice Sports.

The Lions began Sundays game with a burst of offence as they controlled the pace for the majority of the first period. The Lions outshot the Badgers 39-21 throughout the game, and Badgers starting goaltender Jensen Murphy turned aside twelve in the opening period alone.

The second period was reminiscent of the first, as both sides played tight defense with limited mistakes. The Lions were coming off a hard fought loss to the Western Mustangs on Friday (Feb.12), and it was apparent that the momentum carried over to the ice on Sunday. The Lions offense and defense were working hard but they couldn't manage to get the puck to the front of the net to generate quality scoring chances.

The third period was when the middle of the ice began to open up as both teams were willing to sacrifice defense for scoring opportunities, with both the Badgers and Lions looking to rise in the OUA standings. The Badgers were the first to crack the scoreboard, with the goal coming at the 3:48 mark of the third from a dump in that Bronwyn O'Neil chased down and lifted the puck on net which Lions goalie Megan Lee (Orillia, Ont.) kicked away, but the rebound found the stick of a crashing Kimberly Brown, who finished the play off giving the Badgers the one goal advantage.

As the clock dwindled down, the desperate Lions pulled Lee and out jumped the extra attacker. The Lions moved the puck around inside the Badgers blue line until the puck reached the stick of Tegan Duncan (Oakville, Ont.) at the point, who wired a shot into the top corner to tie the game up at 1-1. The goal was assisted by Lauren Cavarzan (Hamilton) and Erin Locke (Toronto) with just over a minute remaining in regulation.

Both sides were unsuccessful in the first overtime period, sending the game into a second overtime period. The Badgers, who are in the middle of the OUA pack and are in need of points ended the game under two minutes into the second overtime period. The goal came from a Brenna Murphy individual effort, that saw her snipe a shot passed Lee to give the Badgers their tenth win on the season.

The Badgers improved their season record to 7-3-11-1 and continue to climb in the standings, with the Lions sitting at 4-4-9-4 after Sunday's loss. The Lions are next in action Friday (Feb. 19) when they travel downtown to take on the University of Toronto Varsity Blues at 7:30pm.
