The York University women's hockey team was defeated 6-2 in Toronto against the nationally ranked Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday evening (Feb. 19).

The goals came in waves of two, as the Varsity Blues were able to put up a pair of goals per period against the Lions.

In a solo effort in front of net Jacqueline Scheffel executed off of a power play and put the Varsity Blues up 1-0 at 10:31. Shortly after, Taylor Day added a second goal to the scoreboard at 16:45 with the help of Christine Chao and Rebecca Bourgeois to make it 2-0 heading into the first intermission.Â

In the second period Day, Chao, and Bourgeois were back at it again to slip another goal into the net on a power play. At 9:25 Day was credited with the goal and Chao and Bourgeois were awarded the assists. Megan O'Brien was also added to the scoring list at 11:49 to make it 4-0 with assists from Jessica Robichaud and Lauren Straatman.

It was a high scoring third period as both teams were able to add two goals each for a 6-2 final score. On a power play Straatman grabbed a goal of her own with the help of Kiyono Cox and Jacqueline Scheffel at 7:24, then at 17:49 Kristi Riseley put her name on the scoresheet after Day passed her the puck.

The Lions snagged their two goals within a minute's span. At 18:10
Rianna Langford (Collingwood, Ont.) and
Amy Locke (Toronto) circulated the puck before finding the stick of
Lauren Cavarzan (Hamilton, Ont.) for a goal. Then at 18:48 Cavarzan found
Kristen Barbara (Mount Hope, Ont.) in front of net to round out the scoring.

With the win in hand the Varsity Blues (12-4-4-3) climb to second place in OUA Standings, while York (4-4-11-4) remain in eleventh place.

On Saturday (Feb. 20) the Lions are back at home to host the Windsor Lancers for their last game of the season. Puck drop will be at 7pm at Canlan Ice Arena.
