LIONS FALL TO MUSTANGS ON THE ROAD

The York University Lions women's volleyball team were swept in straight sets by the Western on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 6) in London, Ont.

The 13-2 Mustangs came out of the gates strong on Saturday as they took the first set, surrendering  only 13 Lion points. The Mustangs were led by Aja Gyimah, who finished with an impressive stat line of 13.5 points and 12 kills.

In the second set the Lions began to crawl back into the match as they exchanged scoring plays, leading the Lions in their comeback was Celeste Witzell (Kitchener, Ont.), who finished with a team high seven points and six kills. Unfortunately, the Lions fell victim to the soaring Kelsey Veltman who totaled 12 points and 12 kills, which helped fuel the Mustangs over the Lions 25-19.

The third set came down to the wire which saw the Lions controlling the pace as they attempted to extend the match to four sets, but a Mustang offensive resurgence resulted in a two-point win, 25-23.

The Lions are now 5-10 on the season with four games remaining in the regular season. After Saturdays win the Mustangs improved to 14-2 and are chasing down CIS seventh ranked McMaster Marauders for first place in the OUA Western conference.

The Lions are back on the court tomorrow (Feb. 7) when they travel to Windsor to take on the 9-5 Lancers.
