Fourth-year midfielder
Jonathan Lao scored in the 90
th minute to help the York University Lions men's soccer team extend its winning streak to seven games with a 2-1 win over the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday (Sept. 18) at Alumni Stadium in Guelph, Ont.
Â
Lao (Unionville, Ont.) found the back of the net on a beautiful free kick just before the final whistle to complete the comeback after the Lions fell behind early in the second half.
Â
The victory keeps the No. 1 nationally-ranked Lions undefeated with a 7-0-0 record this year, while the No. 9 Gryphons were handed their first loss and are now 3-1-2.
Â
All of the action came in the second half of the game after the Gryphons struck first in the 63
rd minute. With Guelph leading 1-0 York's offence awoke in the 80
th minute with a strike from
Ryan Telfer (Mississauga, Ont.) for an unassisted goal tying the game at 1-1.
Â
Then in the waning moments of the game Lao put the game away and broke the tie with his goal to give the match a 2-1 final in favor of the Lions.
Â
On the other side of the ball, York's defense remained tough through adversity. This was led by
Andrew D'Souza's (Mississauga, Ont.) four saves on five shot attempts.
Â
The defending CIS champion Lions have yet to lose thanks to their high powered offence and stingy defence. The last time that the Lions lost was Sept. 26, 2015, to the Windsor Lancers, almost a full calendar year ago. Thanks to the success and efforts of this group the Lions remain atop the standings in the OUA West.
Â
The Lions next match will take place on Saturday (Sept. 24) at 8:15pm in Windsor, Ont., when they take on the Windsor Lancers. The No. 1 team in the nation will return home on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 8:15pm when they rematch the Guelph Gryphons at Alumni Field. Â
