The No. 1 nationally-ranked York University Lions men's soccer team needed until the 72
nd minute to get on the board but then scored three quick goals to defeat the Waterloo Warriors 3-0 in the annual Frosh Frenzy game in front of more than 2,500 fans at Alumni Field.
Â
The Lions outshot the Warriors 17-3 in the game and had numerous strong scoring chances but took most of the game to beat Waterloo goalkeeper Thomas Modjesch, who finished with five saves to go along with the three goals allowed.
Â
The first-year students in attendance stayed with their team throughout and were finally rewarded in the 72
nd minute when rookie
Cristian Cavallini (Woodbridge, Ont.) headed the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Â
That marker seemed to open the floodgates for the Lions as they added another in the 85
th minute and rounded out the scoring in the 90
th minute to remain undefeated on the season.
Â
Cavallini had a tremendous contest as he was also responsible for the assist on
Milan Beader's goal (Oakville, Ont.), feeding him a terrific pass that Beader tapped into the net.
Â
Steve Kloutsouniotis (Markham, Ont.) was credited with the final goal, while defender
De Vante Walker (Brampton, Ont.) picked up a pair of assists on the evening.
Â
The Lions improved to 5-0-0 with the win and are atop the OUA West standings as the first team with five wins on the season. The Warriors remained winless and slipped to 1-3-0.
Â
Next up for the Lions is a rematch against the No. 7 McMaster Marauders, whom the Lions defeated by a 4-2 score on Wednesday evening. The upcoming contest is set for Saturday, Sept. 17 at 3:15pm.
