The York University Lions women's basketball team returned to the court on Saturday night to square off against the No. 6 nationally-ranked Ryerson Rams, and after four quarters of play the Lions fell in defeat by a score of 64-51.Â
Â
The Rams struck fast out of the gate and jumped up to an early 9-0 lead. York's
Nina Guzina (Toronto) recorded four points in the opening quarter as she hit two free throws and a jump shot. However, the Rams played exceptional defence and ended the quarter with a 21-12 lead.
Â
The Rams found success at the charity stripe as they hit nine shots at the foul line in the second quarter. Foul trouble for the Lions was one of the main factors in the Rams escalating lead in the second.
Ishanaa Seupersadsingh (Markham, Ont.) hit two free throws and a jump shot in the quarter to help the Lions comeback efforts. Seupersadsingh recorded eight points, five rebounds and three assists in the game. The Lions would enter half time trailing by a score of 42-24.
Â
The third quarter was low scoring on both ends as the Rams put up 13 points and the Lions just 10 and Ryerson continued to lead in the game.
Â
In the fourth, fifth-year Wallaceburg, Ont., native
Shauney Fischer recorded eight of her team-leading 12 points to help the Lions outscore the Rams 17-9, but it was too late to narrow the gap completely. At the end of the day the Rams offensive attack was too much to contain and the Lions fell in defeat by a score of 64-51.
Â
Fischer also had nine rebounds in the game and led the Lions in scoring for the third game in a row. Ryerson's leader on the court was Sofia Paska with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
Â
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Lions as their next game will take place on Friday when they travel down the QEW to face off against the No. 1 nationally-ranked McMaster Marauders in Hamilton, Ont. Tip-off is at 6pm.
