Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | By Joey Ricottone

VAZQUEZ DRAINS LAST-SECOND THREE FOR UPSET WIN OVER NO. 10 MARAUDERS

With two seconds left on the clock, Julio Vazquez sank a corner three to break a 68-68 deadlock and give the York University Lions men's basketball team a thrilling 71-68 win over the No. 10 nationally ranked McMaster Marauders at Burridge Gymnasium in Hamilton, Ont.

Vazquez scored 11 of his 17 points in the final frame, including the winning basket after he faked out his defender and then stepped to the side and coolly drained the three. The win was the team's second in three games and improves their record to 4-7 on the year, while the Marauders dropped to 6-6 with the loss.

A low-scoring first quarter affair kept both teams within striking distance of one another. Yaw Antwi-Boasiako (London, Ont.) did all of his damage in the first quarter with all four of his points coming in this span. Antwi-Boasiako's effort helped to keep the game in reach to elude an early McMaster lead. The Marauders would outscore York by one point, as the game would move into the second quarter with a score of 13-12.

The Lions' first big quarter would take place in the second as they would outscore the Marauders by a score of 23-17. Nidun Chandrakumar (Scarborough, Ont.) took the charge with his eight points in the quarter. Chandrakumar would tally nine points, five rebounds and six assists in the game.

The game's leading scorer, Brandon Ramirez (Scarborough, Ont.), made his noise in the third quarter with his seven points. Ramirez, who has been going off in the second half of the season, recorded 22 points and eight rebounds in the game. With the Lions leading 53-51 entering the fourth quarter they knew they were in for a dogfight and Vazquez proved to be the spark they needed.

Before Vasquez hit his incredible game winning shot, Ramirez hit a jump shot to set up the Lions at 68 points. The Marauders would hit two free throws to tie the game at 68 before Vazquez would send the dagger from beyond the arc.

The Lions will have the chance to take down a nationally-ranked opponent for the second straight night on Saturday when they travel to St. Catharines, Ont., to face the No. 8 Brock Badgers at Bob Davis Gymnasium beginning at 8pm.
