LIONS HOLD OFF GOLDEN HAWKS WITH SHOOTOUT VICTORY

The York University Lions women's hockey team bounced back after allowing a late third-period goal to earn a 3-2 shootout victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks in Waterloo, Ont., on Sunday night.

The Lions took a 2-1 lead at 14:16 of the final frame on a power play goal by team captain Amy Locke (Toronto) and looked like they were going to hold on for the win. But with less than two minutes remaining, the Golden Hawks tied the game when Jaden Head found the back of the net.

After two scoreless overtime frames, the shootout went to a fourth round before a winner was determined. York goaltender Lauren Dubie (London, Ont.) and Laurier netminder Amanda Smith each stopped the first three shooters they faced, but Justine Treadwell (Huntsville, Ont.) scored on her attempt and Dubie again stood tall for the last shooter to give the Lions the win.

Laurier's late goal represented the second time in the contest they had equalled the score after the Lions pulled ahead. York opened the scoring just 2:47 into the game on Sarah Power's (Caledon, Ont.) second goal in as many games and the Lions carried the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Midway through the second the Golden Hawks tied it on a goal by Emily Woodhouse, putting the score at 1-1 where it would remain until Locke's marker in the third.

The Lions improved to 2-2-7-4 with the victory and have 14 points in the OUA standings. Laurier picked up a single point by getting the game to the shootout and remain at the bottom of the conference with seven points.

The Lions will be on the road next weekend, first travelling downtown to face the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday evening (Jan. 14) at 7pm before heading to Oshawa, Ont., on Sunday (Jan. 15) for a game against the UOIT Ridgebacks beginning at 3:30pm.
