LIONS ERASE TWO-GOAL DEFICIT IN SHOOTOUT WIN OVER BADGERS

The York University Lions men's hockey team won its second straight game to start the 2017-18 season on Saturday and came back from a two-goal deficit with a 4-3 shootout victory over the Brock Badgers.

The Badgers' stayed in the game thanks to the tremendous play of goaltender Clint Windsor, who stood on his head to make 49 saves on the 52 shots he faced.

The Lions trailed 1-0 after the first period, 2-1 after the second and fell behind by two goals 38 seconds into the third period on Sammy Banga's tally. But the Lions came roaring back two minutes later when Derek Sheppard scored his first of the season to cut the deficit to one again. Less than five minutes after that, Trevor Petersen scored his second power play goal of the season to tie the game.

The rest of the third period and the five-minute overtime was scoreless, and the Lions earned the second point in the standings with goals by Josh LaFrance and Sheppard in the shootout.

Brock opened the scoring at 15:25 of the first period on a goal by Mack Lemmon. The Lions responded late in the second with a shorthanded tally by Kyle Campbell, but the tie game lasted only six minutes before Brock took the lead again on Ryan Purvis' marker.

York goaltender Alex Fotinos made 33 saves to earn his first win of the season.

The Lions will return home next weekend for a pair of contests against teams from the OUA East Division. The UOIT Ridgebacks will visit on Friday night and the RMC Paladins on Saturday. Puck drop in both games is set for 7pm at Canlan Ice Sports.
