HAWKS USE BIG OPENING QUARTER TO TAKE DOWN LIONS

The York University Lions men's basketball team was outscored by eight points in the first quarter and could not recover en route to an 87-75 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks at the Wilfrid Laurier Athletic Complex in Waterloo, Ont., on Friday night.
 
Laurier raced to a 24-16 lead after the opening 10 minutes of play. The second quarter was a much tighter, high-scoring affair that saw 49 points added to the scoreboard, and the Hawks stretched their lead to nine at 49-40 at the half.
 
The third and fourth quarters played out in similar fashion to the second, with the Lions keeping the score close but the Golden Hawks maintaining their advantage. The game ended with Laurier ahead by 12, giving the Hawks their third win of the season to improve to 3-3. The Lions fell to 2-4 with the loss.
 
Josiah Riley had the best game of his young OUA career, pouring in 19 points and adding four rebounds, two steals and one assist. Brandon Ramirez added 11 points and nine rebounds, and Chevon Brown had 10 points, five rebounds, three steals and one assist.
 
 
The Hawks also had three players in double digits. Ben Stevens led the way with 15 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, while Matt Minutillo and Tevaun Kokko chipped in with 14 points apiece.
 
The Lions will play in Waterloo, Ont., again on Saturday night, this time against the Waterloo Warriors. Tip-off is set for 8pm.
