The York University Lions men's basketball team was handed a 77-66 defeat by the Waterloo Warriors at the Physical Activities Complex in Waterloo, Ont., on Saturday night.
Shooting struggles behind the arc proved to be the difference, as the Lions shot just 16.2 per cent from three, compared to 33.3 per cent by the Warriors.
The first quarter was a tight, low-scoring affair in which the home squad held a one-point advantage, at 15-14, after the opening 10 minutes. Momentum swung in the second quarter, however, as the Warriors raced to 26 points and held the Lions to just 11 in the frame to take a 41-25 lead into halftime.
It was the Lions who came out flying in the third quarter, putting up 27 points and allowing only 15 to the Warriors to pull to within four points, at 56-52. But that was as close as they would get, as the Warriors found their game again before it was too late and held on to win by 11 for their second victory in a row.
The Lions dropped to 2-5 on the season and have lost four in a row.
Chevon Brown put up a team-high 17 points as well as four rebounds and two steals, while
Gianmarco Luciani came in off the bench to score 14 points and add eight rebounds.
Waterloo had two players score more than 20 points. Simon Petrov led the way with 27 points, five rebounds and six assists, while Nedim Hodzic added 21 points and led all players with 15 rebounds.
After four straight on the road, the Lions will return home next weekend to face the Western Mustangs and Windsor Lancers at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Friday and Saturday, respectively, beginning at 8pm.
