The York University Lions women's volleyball team capped off a successful road trip to Kingston, Ont., on Sunday afternoon with a three-set victory over the Queen's Gaels.
Celeste Witzell led the way with 17 points in just three sets, a remarkable 5.7 points-per-set average. She had 12 kills, two service aces and three blocks and also added a pair of digs.
The result of the match was never really in doubt as the Lions rolled through the three sets with relative ease. The Gaels did not record more than 19 points in any set, with the Lions winning 25-15, 25-18 and 25-19.
Heather Setka also had a big afternoon with 14 points on 12 kills and two blocks. Setter
Mimi Demski led all players with 34 assists and also chipped in with 7.5 points on four service aces and two kills, and
Melissa Smillie finished with a match-high 13 digs.
The Gaels' leading scorer was Shannon Neville with 11 points on nine kills and two service aces and she also had eight digs, a team high.
After three straight games on the road, the Lions will finally play their home opener on Friday night and will play their next six games at the Tait McKenzie Centre. Up first is a contest against the undefeated Ryerson Rams at 6pm.
