The York University Lions women's basketball team played a hard-fought game against the Ottawa Gee-Gees but a difficult second quarter made the difference as the visitor's took the 62-54 victory at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Friday night.
Â
The cornerstones of the Lions' squad,
Shauney Fischer (Wallaceburg, Ont.) and
Ishanaa Seupersadsingh (Markham, Ont.), went straight to work in their second-last home-game at York. In the opening quarter alone, the fifth-year duo combined for nine points. Seupersadsingh utilized her signature side step pull up-jumper to provide the Lions an advantage en route to a 15-14 lead entering the second.
Â
Moving forward to the second quarter, the Lions were hoping to get a leg up on the Gee-Gees. However, York's one-point lead would be soon forgotten with Ottawa's aggressive offensive surge. The Gee-Gees would rout the Lions in the second frame as they outscored York 15-5 to end the half with a 29-20 advantage.
Â
After returning from halftime the two fifth-year standouts returned to their first-quarter form as they combined for 10 more points. One of the games most impressive plays came when Fischer completed a three-point play after being mauled in the paint to sink the basket.
Â
Despite the Lions improved play in the quarter, the Gee-Gees were able to stay one step ahead thanks their ability to create turnovers and hit well-selected jump shots. They continued to add to their lead and were up 46-36 after three.
Â
The Lions attempted to mount a comeback in the fourth.
Sandra Nagowska (Peterborough, Ont.) was prepared to give her all as she checked into the game to record four points in the final period of play. However, the main attractions once again were Fischer and Seupersadsingh. Fischer finished her night with four points, which would culminate in her leading the team in scoring with 15, while Seupersadsingh finished her night in the fourth quarter when she intercepted a cross court pass and streaked to the basket to sink a layup.
Â
The Lions valiant effort was just not enough to surpass the Gee-Gees' dominant second quarter as the game ended with a final score of 62-54.
Â
The Lions are 5-12 o the season and have one more home game before the season comes to a close. They will suit up against the Carleton Ravens on Saturday evening when the No. 5 team visits the Tait McKenzie Centre for a contest beginning at 6pm
