LIONS EXTEND WIN STREAK TO SEVEN WITH SWEEP OF GAELS

The York University Lions men's volleyball team picked up its seventh straight victory on Saturday afternoon with a straight-sets sweep of the Queen's Gaels at the Athletics & Recreation Centre in Kingston, Ont.

The Lions kept pace with the Ryerson Rams for top spot in the OUA East Division standings, and the Lions also have three games in hand.

The first set was a back and forth battle in which neither team could pull ahead by more than two points. Tied at 24-24, the Lions won the next two points on kills by Robert Thompson (Maple, Ont.) and Toure Nwakwesi (Brampton, Ont.) to take the first set 26-24.

In the second set the Gaels held a one-point lead at 18-17 before the Lions went on a big run with Thompson serving, rallying off six straight points to take a 23-18 lead they eventually turned into a 25-20 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

It was the Gaels who led for most of the third set, at one point holding an 18-14 advantage and leading by a point as late as 22-21. But the Lions put together four straight points after that, including three on kills by Alex Duncan-Thibault (Scarborough, Ont.), to win the match in straight sets by taking the third 25-21.

Duncan-Thibault had another monster game, putting up 22.5 points on 19 kills, 2.5 blocks and one service ace in just three sets, to extend his lead atop the OUA scoring race to 5.5 points per set.

The Gaels' leading scorer was Markus Trence with 12 points.

The Lions will look for their eighth straight win on Sunday afternoon when they return to the court to face the RMC Paladins starting at 3pm.
