LIONS LOSE FIVE-SET HEARTBREAKER TO RIVAL GAELS

The York University Lions women's volleyball team suffered a heartbreaking five-set loss to the Queen's Gaels at the Athletics & Recreation Centre in Kingston, Ont., on Saturday afternoon.

The loss was a big one for the visiting Lions, who now sit two points back of the Gaels with two matches remaining next weekend. The Lions hold a 7-9 record and the Gaels are at 8-8.

The first set was a tight affair that required additional points be played after the two squads were tied 25-25, and it was the Gaels who pulled ahead with two straight points to win the first 27-25.

The Lions bounced back in the second, however, and were the ones to pull ahead late, ultimately taking the set 25-23. But momentum was tough to hold onto in this match, and the Gaels grabbed it back in the third to win 25-16.

Facing elimination in the fourth, the Lions dug deep and rallied off a number of big points to win 25-16. But once again the Gaels fought back and took the match by winning the fifth 15-9.

Heather Setka (Winnipeg) and Celeste Witzell (Kitchener, Ont.) both had strong games for the Lions. Setka led all York players with 19 points on 14 kills, three service aces and two blocks, while Witzel had 13 kills and two blocks.

Kirsten Dillon (Surrey, B.C.) had 37 assists and Carley Flemmer (Delta, B.C.) posted 12 digs.

The match's leading scorer was Caroline Livingston, who finished with 25.5 points on 25 kills and an assisted block and also added 11 digs.

The Lions will remain in Kingston, Ont., for another match on Sunday afternoon, this time against the RMC Paladins on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1pm.
