VARSITY BLUES TOP LIONS IN FRIDAY AFTERNOON CONTEST

The York University Lions women's basketball team suffered a 67-57 defeat at the hands of the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday afternoon in the University of Toronto's annual School Day game at the Goldring Centre.

The game started out as a defensive, low-scoring affair with the Blues holding a narrow 11-9 advantage after the first quarter of play. The second played out in similar fashion, with the Blues again outscoring the Lions by two, and they held a 26-22 advantage at the half.

Action picked up in the second half as both teams found their offensive groove and shot better. Despite the Lions' best attempts to narrow the gap, the Blues kept keeping pace and pushed their lead to 10 after three quarters, and 51-41.

The two teams traded points in the final frame as the Blues held onto their 10-point lead and the game finished with the same margin of difference.

Ishanaa Seupersadsingh (Markham, Ont.) and Shauney Fischer (Wallaceburg, Ont.) both had strong individual performances. Seupersadsingh finished with a game-high 17 points and also added seven rebounds, one assist and two steals, while Fischer had 15 points, five rebounds and one block.

The Varsity Blues were led in scoring by Keyira Parkes, who finished with 16 points, two rebounds, one assist, two steals and one block, and Rahshida Atkinson, who had 15 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and one steal.

With the loss the Lions slipped to 5-11 on the season, while the Blues are now 7-8.

The Lions now have the rest of the weekend off and will return to action next Friday when they welcome the Ottawa Gee-Gees to the Tait McKenzie Centre. Tip-off is set for 6pm.
