Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

LIONS LET LEAD SLIP AWAY IN FOURTH, FALL TO RAMS IN FIVE SETS

The York University Lions men's volleyball team had three match points in the fourth set but could not close it out and went on to fall in five sets to the Ryerson Rams at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Saturday night.

In a match pitting the top two teams in the OUA East standings, the Lions raced out to an early lead by taking the first set 25-18. However, momentum shifted in the second and it was the Rams pulling ahead, ultimately taking the set by the same 25-18 score to level the match at 1-1.

The Lions built a big lead in the third set and managed to hold off a rally by the Rams late, taking it 25-22 for a 2-1 advantage.

They were not as fortunate in the fourth set, however. Looking to close out the match and extend their winning streak to six matches, the Lions never trailed in the set and maintained a three-point lead down the stretch, getting the score to 24-21 and needing just one more point to win. But the Rams came storming back and won five straight points, thanks in large part to three straight attack errors by Lions outside hitters, and sent the match to a fifth set.

The Lions were unable to recover after that. Ryerson scored the first three points of the fifth and never looked back, winning 15-10 to pull within two points of the Lions in the division. The Lions still sit first, at 8-2, with the 7-3 Rams sitting two points back.

Andrew Shotbolt and Andrew Tauhid led the Lions with 16 points apiece. Shotbolt had 15 kills and two assisted blocks, while Tauhid finished with 13 kills, two service aces and two assisted blocks.

As he has done all season, setter Logan Mend had another strong game with a match-high 42 assists as well as 10 digs and 7.5 points.

Ryerson was led by Lucas Coleman's 15 points on 13 kills, one service ace and two assisted blocks.

The Lions will look to get back into the win column on Sunday when they travel back downtown, this time to the University of Toronto for a match against the Varsity Blues that begins at 1pm.
