Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

TWO LATE GOALS GIVE LAKERS VICTORY OVER LIONS

The York University Lions women's hockey team allowed two late goals to the Nipissing Lakers in a 3-1 defeat at Memorial Gardens in North Bay, Ont., on Saturday night.

Neither team scored in the first period, although the Lakers outshot the Lions 13-8 and York goaltender Eva Hall stood tall to keep the home team off the scoreboard.

The Lakers finally broke the deadlock at 7:22 of the second period on a goal by Zosia Baker. The lead was short-lived, however, as Kelsey McHolm levelled the score at 1-1 less than four minutes later on an unassisted tally, and the score remained tied heading into the final frame.

The third was a tightly-contested period in which there were just 12 total shots, six from each time. But it was the Lakers who found the back of the net at 13:04 on a goal by Hunter Mosher that ended up standing as the game winner.

Jetta Derenoski added an empty netter at 19:08 to round out the scoring.

Hall finished with 24 saves on the 26 shots she faced, while Jacqueline Rochefort earned the win after turning aside 20 of her 21 shots.

The Lions are now 5-0-9-3 and remain outside the playoff picture, while the Lakers improved to 9-2-4-2 and sit in third place in the standings.

The Lions will remain in northern Ontario for another contest on Sunday, travelling to Sudbury, Ont., for a game against the Laurentian Voyageurs. Puck drop is 1:50pm at Countryside Arena.
