LIONS BATTLE HARD BUT DROP SEASON OPENER TO GAELS

The York Lions men's basketball team played against the Queen's Gaels during their home opener at the Tait McKenzie Center on Friday and despite valiant comeback attempt in the second half fell to the Gaels by a score of 89-76.
 
Queen's gained the lead from the beginning of the game and in the opening quarter built a 26-11 lead., The Gael's Connor Keefe scored the first two points of the game and was able to add another jump shot in the quarter. York's Brendon Chevannes scored the first point for the Lions with a free throw and contributed two other points soon after.
 
In the second quarter, the Gaels kept their lead against Queen's, however, the Lions played much better after a slow start and outscored the Gaels in the quarter. The Lions contributed 17 points to the game in this quarter as the Gaels added 14. York's Chevon Brown led the team in points as he scored ten of the points for the Lions.
 
The Lions and Gaels entered half time at 40-28 for the Gaels.
 
The remainder of the game saw some back and forth action from both teams. In the third quarter, Queen's scored 27 points while the Lions added 26. York's DeAndrea Pierre contributed six points in the quarter, Prince Kamunga added two points and Brown had seven.
 
The fourth quarter saw the Lions make a run and cut the lead to five points but the Gaels pulled away late to finish the game with a 89-76 victory. Queen's guard Jaz Bains was on fire for the Gaels all night, scoring 37 points and going 8 of 11 from three-point land. For the home side, Brown had a team-high 28 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists, while Chevannes had a solid game in his debut with the Lions with 14 points eight rebounds, and three steals.  
 
The Lions will be playing the Windsor Lancers next on Friday Nov. 2 in Windsor, Ont.
