YORK TAKES DOWN RIVAL VARSITY BLUES

Jaslan Stirling scored her third hat trick of the season to lead the York University Lions women's field hockey team to a big 4-2 road victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues at Back Campus Fields on Wednesday evening.

The second-year forward made it look easy, netting three goals against the top team in the OUA division. Stirling continues to dominate the league, leading the OUA with 16 goals and 32 points on the season. With the win, the Lions moved ahead of the Varsity Blues by one point for first place in the OUA standings.

The Lions opened up the action quickly, with Stirling scoring just two minutes into the game. Hilary Ziraldo, of the Varsity Blues, scored her first of two goals in the 7th minute of the game evening the score at 1-1. In the 18th minute, Stirling was able to find the back of the net again, to give the Lions back the lead. Claire Church scored off a penalty corner in the 31st minute to increase the lead to 3-1 just before the half, and Stirling scored her third goal for the hat trick in the 53rd minute. Ziraldo was able to score one last goal in the 60th minute, but the Lions' lead was too far for the Varsity Blues to reach.

The Lions play next when they travel to Montreal, Que. on Oct. 20 to compete against the Western Mustangs at 10:45 and the McGill Martlets at 12:30pm. The Lions play their last regular season game on Oct. 21 at 12:30pm against the Waterloo Warriors.
