The York University Lions men's hockey team beat the Lakehead Thunderwolves with a 4-2 victory on Saturday, November 10 in Thunderbay, Ont., their second win against the Thunderwolves this weekend.
The Lions and the Thunderwolves finished the first period of the game scoreless, but they were both, however, able to fire several shots on goal, which were all saved by the respective goalkeepers. York netiminder
Mack Shields was able to keep the Lions' net secured as he saved 17 of Lakehead's shots and Lakehead was able to save all nine of York's shots.
Just 44 seconds into the second period, York was able to score the first goal of the game, which was scored by
Justin Maiolino and assisted by Nic Coric and
Daniel Nikandrov. Lakehead then took the lead from York as they scored two goals in the Lions' net, the first by the Thunderwolves' Scott Gall and the second by Austin McDonald.
In the third period, the Lions scored a trio of goals to take the lead and the win from the home team. Their first goal came from Nikandrov and was assisted by
Reid Jackman. They then scored six minutes later with a goal by
Scott Feser, which was assisted by Nikandrov for his third point of the night. The Lions were not done scoring after snatching the lead from Lakehead, as York's
Jack Goranson scored the final goal of the game, which was assisted by
Alex Mowbray and
Ben Verrall.
Shields had an impressive game as he was able to save 43 out of the 45 shots fired against the Lions' net and Lakeheads' Nic Renyard was able to save 23 out of the 27 shots by the Lions.
The Lions will be playing the Windsor Lancers next at Canlan Ice Sports on Friday, Nov. 16.
