LIONS SCORE SIX GOALS IN WIN AGAINST LANCERS

The York University women's hockey team put an end to their four-game losing streak with a 6-1 victory against the Windsor Lancers on Friday evening at Canlan Ice Sports.

The Lions opened up the first period and outplayed the Lancers, taking 12 shots on goal compared to Windsor's two. York's Christina Chin, who was assisted by Chelsea Tucker, gave the Lions an early lead at 5:01 when she placed the puck perfectly in the bottom right corner through a crowded Lancers net. Later in the period at 14:49, Lions captain Jenna Gray intercepted a puck in the Lancers' end zone which led her to score her first goal of the season.

Two minutes later, Windsor's Emma Welburn scored at 16:44 on the Lancers second shot of the game. With only 13 seconds left before the buzzer, Kara Washer took a slap shot in front of the net and added to the Lions lead, which stood at 3-1 at the end of the first period.

The Lancers came out stronger in the second period and took 13 shots on Lauren Dubie, but were unable to get one in the net. The Lancers had a glorious chance to cut into the lead after two York penalties led to 5-on-3 hockey, however the Lions were solid defensively and managed to kill the power play. The Lions fed off their momentum from the first period and scored two more goals to increase their lead. At 12:33, Kelsey McHolm who leads the Lions in goals this season, was assisted by Courtney Gardiner and Brooke Anderson, and scored her first goal of the game on a rebound from Gardiner's shot on goal. Just over a minute, Taylor Davison scored the Lions fifth goal after Tayler Murphy centered the puck to Davison right in front of the net.

The Lions continued to dominate the game adding another goal in the third period to increase their insurmountable lead against the Lancers. At 12:46, it was Leah Hibbert who was finally able to put the puck in the back of the net after three consecutive rebounds. Dubie saved nine more shots on goal in the third period and the Lions finished the game with a huge 6-1 win against the Lancers.

The Lions will be playing at home tomorrow, Nov. 9 against the Nipissing Lakers. The game is scheduled to start at 7pm.
