The York University Lions women's hockey team lost 3-2 in a shootout to the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday, Nov. 10 on the Lions' home rink.
The Lions were the only team to secure a goal in the first period of the game as the Lions' offense was able to fire 10 shots at the Lakers' net, one of them resulting in the first goal of the game from
Kelsey McHolm, which was assisted by
Brooke Anderson. The Lakers attempted to score on York's net eight times, however, none of the shots were able to reach the back of York's net and the Lions led 1-0 after the first period against the visiting team.
In the second period, the Lakers were able to add a couple goals against the Lions and take the lead. The second period saw much more shots from both teams, as Nipissing led with 17 shots on goal and York had 11. In the first three minutes of the second period, the Lakers scored two back-to-back goals. The first taking place at 3:07 by Nipissing's Sam Strassburger, which was assisted by Jade Gauthier as well as Taylor McManus and the second goal just over 20 seconds later by Gauthier.
The Lions responded to the Lakers' lead and York's
Chelsea Tucker tied the game with a successful shot on goal.
In the third period, the teams battled it out to take the win against the other. However, neither team was able to score and York's goalkeeper
Lauren Dubie saved 11 of Nipissing's shots on goal.
The teams went into overtime and the extra period solved nothing so the two teams went to a shootout. The Lakers were able to score twice against Dubie to take the win.
The Lions will be playing the Western Mustangs in their next game on Friday, Nov. 17 in London, Ont.
