LIONS FALL TO LANCERS IN FIRST AWAY GAME OF SEASON

The York University Lions women's basketball jumped out to an early lead but were unable to hold on were defeated by the Windsor Lancers 97-76 at St. Denis Centre in Windsor, Ont. on Friday evening.
 
The Lions were the first to get on the scoreboard when Lauren Golding nailed both of her free throw attempts. For the next five minutes, the first quarter saw back and forth action as the Lions and Lancers were close in points. The Lancers were able to build a 10-point lead, 19-10, however the Lions dominated the last three minutes of the quarter building on the momentum of a three pointer by Emma Jonas. Cyanna King nailed four free throws and scored a lay-up late in the quarter to give the Lions a 21-20 lead over the Lancers after the first quarter.
 
The second quarter was similar to the first with the Lions and Lancers staying close in points, however the Lancers were able to come away with a 39-36 lead at the break. The Lions opened the quarter with two lay-ups, one by Golding followed by Katrina Collins-Samuels. Late in the quarter, Windsor's Jordan Gutt, made a 3-point jump shot, followed by Kayah Clarke with a layup, to increase the Lancer's lead just before the break.
 
The Lions were able to add 23 more points in the third quarter, however the Lancers added 30 which allowed them gain a 10-point lead with a score of 69-59 at the end of the third. Although the Lions were able to get four, three-point jumpers in the fourth quarter, courtesy of Haley Bowie, Collins-Samuels, Avery Bathe-Minard, and Jonas, the Lancers pulled away as the quarter wore on and picked up the 97-76 victory.
 
Golding finished as the Lions leading scorer on the night with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Collins-Samuels also had a strong game, contributing 15 points, three rebounds and one assist, while Bowie came away with ten points, five assists and two rebounds. Leading the way for the Lancers was Kayah Clarke with 27 points, six assists and one rebound.
 
The Lions are back in action tomorrow when they take on the Western Mustangs in London, Ont. The game is scheduled to start at 6pm.
