LIONS DROP ROAD GAME 5-2 TO GRYPHONS

The York University Lions men's hockey team lost 5-2 to the Guelph Gryphons on Thursday, Nov. 22 in Guelph, Ont., ending the Lions' season high four-game winning streak.

The Gryphons previously fell short to the Lions back on October 13, 2018, as the Lions beat their opponents in a 4-3 win at their home arena. The first period of the game saw 11 shots on goal for the Lions and 12 shots on goal for the Gryphons, one of which was fired by Matt Kenney, entering the Lions' net and giving the Gryphons their first lead of the game.

Each team was able to get on the scoreboard in the second period, as Guelph's Marc Stevens scored at 8:37, which was assisted by teammates Cody Thompson and Scott Simmonds, giving the Gryphons a temporary 2-0 advantage against the visiting Lions.

At 16:45 into the second period, York was able to redeem themselves and score their first goal of the game as defenceman Sal Filice secured a goal for the Lions, which was assisted by forward Reid Jackman and Justin Maiolino.

The Gryphons started up the third period as they did the first two, and scored the first goal of the period at 7:13. A few minutes later Nick Boyer scored another goal for the Gryphons, which was assisted by Matt Kenney and propelled Guelph to a 4-1 lead.

York then responded five minutes later as Josh LaFrance scored the second goal for the Lions, which was assisted by Dexter Bricker. Thompson then scored the last goal for Guelph into an empty net giving them the 5-2 win.

Goaltender Mack Shields made 35 saves for the Lions in the loss, while Gryphons goalie Evan Cormier made 25 saves in picking up the victory.

The Lions will be playing the University of Toronto Varsity Blues at Canlan Ice Sports on Saturday, November 24 for their last home game before the holidays, which will also serve as the 'Dahlgren's Diabeauties & Diabetes Awareness Night,' forward Kaleb Dahlgren's advocacy program to support children with Type 1 Diabetes.
