The York University Lions women's basketball team lost to the Lakehead Thunderwolves in Thunder Bay, Ont. on Saturday, Nov. 24, which put a halt to their historic five-game winning streak.
The scoreboard in the first half of the game was almost identical for both teams. In the first quarter of the game, the Lions ended with 22 points and the Thunderwolves ended with 23.
The Lions'
Lauren Golding opened up the game with a 3-point jump shot. The scoring went back and forth between both teams and neither led to far ahead from the other. The Thunderwolves scored two layups, which was followed by a layup from York's
Katrina Collins-Samuels and a 3-point shot from
Emma Jonas.
In the second quarter, Lions point guard
Haley Bowie, who was York's female athlete of the week and had a career high of 22 points last game against the Laurier Golden Hawks, opened the second quarter with a 3-point shot, giving the Lions a 25-23 lead on the Thunderwolves.
Lakehead then scored six points in a row to take the lead from the Lions, putting the score at 29-25.
Both teams ended up scoring 16 points in the second period, however, the Thunderwolves snatched the lead as they were tied 38-38 with 10 seconds remaining in the second quarter. However, the Thunderwolves' Sofia Lluch's free throw gave Lakehead a one-point 39-38 lead.
In the third quarter, Lluch opened up as she ended the second quarter with a free throw, followed by another. York's
Emma Jonas who is averaging 11.5 points per game, scored a 3-point shot, putting the score at 44-41 for the Lions, but Lakehead came back and held the lead 60-56 at the end of the third quarter.
In the final quarter of the game, Collins-Samuels and Megan Macleod secured the most points for the Lions with 12 and seven points, however, the Thunderbirds were able to capture the win with a three-point lead.
The Thunderwolves' Leashja Grant scored the most points of the game with 29 points and Lions' captain Collins-Samuels contributed 19 points of her own in the game.
The York Lions will be playing the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton, Ont. in their next game on Friday Nov. 30 at 6pm.
