Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

LIONS LOSE HIGH-SCORING GAME 6-5 TO WARRIORS IN OVERTIME

The York University Lions men's hockey team lost a high-scoring game to the Waterloo Warriors on Friday night in Waterloo, Ont., by a score of 6-5 in overtime. With the loss the Lions have dropped their last three games after a red-hot stretch saw them win seven of eight games.

It was all Warriors in the first period as they outshot the Lions 17-5 in the frame. Lions goaltender Mack Shields kept his team in the game, turning away 16 shots in the period but Waterloo gained a 1-0 lead at the 13:30 mark when Markson Bechtold found the back of the net on the powerplay.

Bechtold's tally was the only goal in the first period for either team, but the Lions came out strong in the second period and fired two quick goals past Warriors netminder Trevor Martin to take a 2-1 lead. The first goal came from defenceman Sal Filice at 1:03 while the second came off the stick of forward Nik Coric just over two minutes later at 3:26.

The Warriors regained the lead with two quick goals of their own from forwards Jack Scanlan at 12:03 and Connor Cole at 13:59. Late in the period the Lions found the equalizer as defenceman Bradley Forrest scored on the powerplay at 18:59 to send the game into the second intermission tied 3-3.

The Lions found themselves down two goals half-way through the third period, as Bechtold's second of the game put the Warriors ahead at 4:19 of the third and a goal from Connor Lovie gave them a 5-3 lead at 10:13. There was no quit on the York bench however, as they quickly brought the score within one on Coric's second goal of the game just under a minute later. They tied up the game 5-5 on the powerplay at the 15:39 mark on captain Scott Feser's seventh goal of the season with assists coming from Morgan Messenger and Reid Jackman to earn the team a point and send the game into overtime.

Lovie beat Shields at 1:27 of overtime to score the game-winner and give the Warriors the upset win.

Shields made 29 saves in the loss for the Lions while Coric led the offense with three points followed by Messenger who had two assists. Forward Cam Nicoll led the way for the Warriors with four assists.

The Lions have a quick turnaround as they will face the Laurier Golden Hawks on the road on Saturday afternoon. The puck drops at 3:30pm.
