LIONS DEFEAT EXCALIBUR IN FIRST HOME GAME OF SEASON

The York University men's volleyball team win their first game of the season 3-0 against the Trent Excalibur in front of the home crowd at Tait Mackenzie Centre on Sunday evening.

After losing 3-1 to both the Nipissing Lakers and Guelph Gryphons in the first two away games of the season, the Lions impressed the crowd winning three sets to win the match.

The Lions were off to a slow start as Trent was able to lead 11-7 early in the first set. After a kill by York's Andrew Tauhid got the crowd going, the Lions were back on track and led the Excalibur midway through the set 16-14. The rest of the set was close as the Excalibur managed to trail one-point behind the Lions. After a York timeout, Toure Nwakwesi came back into the set with a huge kill followed by Tauhid with a service ace to finish the set 25-21 for the Lions.

Similar to the first set, the Lions and the Excalibur went back and forth with each having their chance to lead the set. The Excalibur led early on in the set 13-8, however York closed the lead by one-point and the Excalibur led 16-15 midway through the set. The Lions increased the intensity and came away with a 25-22 final score in the second set.

In the third set the Lions started off strong and picked up a five-point lead against the Excalibur midway through the set 16-11. Dan Everton subbed in and gave the Lions their first point following the break, but the Excalibur managed to score five consecutive points against the Lions and bring the set to a one-point game with the Lions leading 17-16. After a huge kill by Tauhid and a serve by Logan Mend the Lions ended the final set by a score of 25-18.
