York University's Varsity Sport Council's Halloween for Hunger canned food drive was a smashing success as it resulted in over 500 canned food items for the York Federation of Students (YFS) Food Support Centre.
Held over the month of October, Sport Council was collecting canned goods in the front lobby of the Tait McKenzie Centre, and capped off their charitable endeavour at the women's hockey game during last Wednesday's Halloween game. In conjunction with the women's hockey team, Sport Council collected canned goods at the game and held a varsity costume contest.
The winners of the costume contest were the women's volleyball team and track and field athlete Bailey Francis.
Sport Council dropped off the canned goods to the YFS Food Support Centre on Friday morning. The YFS Food Support Centre is located in the basement of the Second Student Centre next to York Lanes and distributes more than 1,000 individual food items per day. Business hours for the food bank are Monday – Thursday from 10:00am – 6:00pm and Friday from 10:00am – 4:00pm and food donations are accepted any time during working hours for anyone who wants to donate.
Sport Council's next charitable project will be held this month as they invite you to join them in raising funds and awareness this Movember for all the dads, brothers, sons and males in our lives. As part of the fundraising efforts, members from the Lions men's varsity teams shave off their moustaches and beards on-court on Friday, Nov. 23rd at the men's volleyball game. Visit yorkulions.ca/movember for more details to find out how you can donate to support men's health.
