The York University Lions women's basketball team was defeated by a score of 65-55 by the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the regular-season finale for both teams in Ottawa on Saturday night.
The Lions finished with an 11-12 record and in fifth place in the OUA East standings thanks to holding the tiebreaker over the Toronto Varsity Blues, who also ended up at 11-12.
The Lions slipped away from the Gee-Gees early in the first quarter and were forced to play catch-up for the remainder of the game. The Lions eventually came within a point of their opponents at the end of the first, which ended 19-18.
For much of the second quarter the Lions were able to stay within two points of the Gee-Gees, but the home squad gained a lead beginning with three minutes left to head into halftime with a 36-28 lead over the Lions.
The Gee-Gees' lead grew to 10 points in the third quarter as the Lions tried to keep up. The Lions closed the gap to three points in the fourth quarter, but the Gee-Gees were able to regain their lead and end the game with a 10-point advantage.
Lindsay Shotbolt led the Lions in both points and rebounds with 13 and 11, respectively, followed by
Lauren Golding with 10 points.
On the Gee-Gees side, Brigitte Lefebrve-Okankwu led the charge with 16 points, followed closely by Angela Ribarich with 14 points. Ribarich also led the team in rebounds with seven.
The Lions will now head into the playoffs and will face the Ryerson Rams on the road on Wednesday night beginning at 6pm at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in a first-round match-up.
