OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION LEADS LIONS TO BIG WIN

The York University Lions men's soccer team won their first game of the regular season against the Windsor Lancers with an impressive 5-0 win at Alumni Field against the Windsor Lancers.

The game was action packed from the beginning, and the Lions wasted no time pressing the action against the Lancers. At the 13-minute mark York's Steve Kloutsouniotis fired a shot on goal but Lancers' goalie Shawn Hunter made a nice save to keep the score at 0-0.

Soon after Kloutsouniotis's attempt, Lions midfielder Cristian Cavallini scored the first goal of the game on a penalty shot at the 21-minute mark.  This was the beginning of a strong game from the Lions, with Kloutsouniotis continued firing his shots throughout the first-half of the game, registering two more by the end of the first half.

The second-half of the game was just as aggressive, if not more, than the first as York continued to apply pressure against the Lancers.

Lions forward Omar Marzouk scored his first goal of the game and of the season soon after the second half got underway. Although the Lancers attempted to respond with aggressive defense, the Lions were able to keep the goals coming.

Fourth-year midfielder Jorgo Nika also scored his first goal of the season and the third goal of the game at the 55-minute mark. Nika's goal was followed by another goal by Cavallini tally with an impressive assist by second-year Marcus Brooks, putting the Lions at a 4-0 lead against the Lancers.

The Lancers attempted to get on the board, but strong defense by the Lions kept the Lancers scoring chances to a minimum. Throughout the game Lions goalkeeper's Mike Argyrides was very vocal with the players in front of him and played a smart game in picking up his first cleansheet of the season.

The final goal of the game was produced by Jon Alex Toromoreno-Duenas with just 11 minutes to spare. Toromoreno-Duenas' goal put the Lions at a 5-0 lead against the Lancers.

The Lions will have a chance to continue their impressive scoring against the Guelph Gryphons on Wednesday, Aug. 29 at Alumni Field at 8:15pm.
