OUA WEST DIVISION RIVALS YORK AND MCMASTER TIE 1-1

The York Lions men's soccer team played against the McMaster Marauders at Alumni Field in pouring rain on Friday, September and tied 1-1 during York's first game of the weekend.

The game started off with a recognition of the 2008 York men's soccer team who won the CIS national championships that year. They were the first York men's soccer team to win a CIS championship since 1977. Since the 2008 team's win, the men's team have won three more national titles and the team was recognized in for the tenth anniversary of their historic win.

The York game against McMaster was off to a slippery start as the players battled it out in rainy weather. Both teams were unable to score in the first half but saw very good tries on both ends.

The Marauders had five chances to score in the first half, however, Lions goalkeeper Mike Argyrides was able to save the two shots on goal.

In the second half of the game, the rain continued to pour down on Alumni Field. Both teams' defense remained strong and neither was able to score until the 65th minute when Omar Marzouk, York's second year forward, scored the first goal of the game.

The Lions kept the lead throughout most of the remainder of the half when McMaster substituted Justin Wood for defensive player Jason Walkowski who scored a header just seconds upon getting on the field at the 81st minute of the game.

The Lions battled it out with the Marauders until the last seconds of the game where they had three more shots in the last nine minutes. The game, however, ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Lions will be playing the Brock Badgers on Sunday at Alumni Field.
