LIONS SWEEP LAKERS 3-0 IN CONVINCING WIN

The York University Lions women's volleyball team beat the Nippising Lakers on Friday, Jan. 18 for their sixth win of the 2018-2019 season. The Lions beat the Lakers in a 3-0 sweep during their first home game since the New Year in front of a packed crowd.

The Lions took the first set 25-17 against the Lakers, whom they also beat during their first game of the season by a score of 3-0. The first set saw great plays from the Lions, especially from York's Cadence Currie who was all over the court for the Lions and had a number of key kills

The Lions continued their strong and cohesive playing into the second set of the game. They secured the second set 25-22, though the Lakers battled the Lions hard in their best played set of the match.

As the Lions led in the beginning of the second set, York's fourth point occurred after several saves from Currie as the ball was going to go out of bounds. The play, which made the crowd cheer in sheer excitement was followed by two serves by Kayla Clennon, which resulted in another two points for the Lions.

The Lions were leading 11-9, York took a time out as the Lakers were catching up to the home team. Currie gave the Lions the comeback they were looking for as she secured another point for Lions with a kill after the timeout.

There were times in the second set when the Lakers almost caught up to the Lions, however, the home team was always able to maintain their lead.

In the third set of the game, Clennon was able to score the tenth point for the Lions with a nice kill followed a few points later by Celeste Witzell with a nice attack that the Lakers were unable to respond to. York's Sarah Williams took over from there and served seven times in a row, to give the Lions a 20-8 lead.

York's Olivia Kim was able to secure the second last point for the Lions and York's Theresa Skubic scored the winning pointfor the Lions, giving them their three set win with a 25-15 third set win.

The Lions Currie, Clennon, and Williams had formidable games as did setter Chiara Da Silva.

The Lions will be playing next against the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, Jan 26 in Waterloo, Ont., as they will go for their second win in a row.
