BIG THIRD PERIOD BY BADGERS RESULTS IN LOSS FOR LIONS

The York University women's hockey team were defeated on road 6-3 by the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon at Seymour Hannah Centre.

The Lions outplayed the Badgers in the first period and kept the game close until the last ten minutes of the third period. The Badgers got on the scoreboard first at 9:49 of the first period with a shot by Niamh Haughey that slipped through the pads of Lions goaltender Eva Hall. After multiple attempts by the Lions to get on the scoreboard, Erin Locke scored the equalizer off a faceoff with four minutes remaining in the first period.

The Lions kept the pressure on and had multiple scoring chances in the second period. Leah Hibbert had the first chance for the Lions to take the lead after a shot right in front of the net was saved by the Badgers goalie. It wasn't until late into the second period at 15:41 that the Badgers were able to take a 2-1 lead after a short-handed, breakaway goal by Amanda Ieradi. Despite the score, the Lions controlled the action and had 25 shots on goal in the first two periods compared to the Badgers' 15.

The Badgers were quick to add to their lead scoring just four minutes into the third period with a wrist shot by Annie Berg. Just a few minutes later, at 7:23 Kelsey McHolm cut the Badgers' lead to just one goal after she slipped the puck passed the Badger's goalie and into the net. The Badgers managed to take a two-goal lead on the Lions at 12:03 after another shorthanded goal, this time by Katreena Whiteye. Just 20 seconds later, Whiteye scored another goal to lead the Lions 5-2 with seven minutes remaining.

At 16:33, after the Lions pulled their goaltender in hopes to get another goal on the score sheet, Brock's Berg managed to score her second goal on an empty net. The Lions never let up which led Ellen Donaldson, with two minutes remaining, to score her first goal of the season, cutting the Badgers' lead in half. Despite a strong effort by the Lions, it was the Badgers who pulled away with a 6-3 victory.

The Lions are back in action on Jan. 11 when they travel to Waterloo, Ont. to take on the Waterloo Warriors. Puck drop is scheduled for 7pm.
