LIONS EXTEND WIN STREAK WITH 2-0 WIN OVER GOLDEN HAWKS

On Friday, the York University Lions women's soccer team faced off against the Laurier Golden Hawks winning 2-0. The Lions were coming off of a three-game win streak, and as they are nearing the end of the regular season, wanted to finish out strong.

The first half got off to a slow start, but the Lions were pushing to get on the scoreboard with multiple shots on net. Midfielder Kalifornia Mitchell had a fantastic shot on net in the 38th minute of the game, followed by an amazing save in the 40th minute by Lions goalkeeper Danitza Indacochea.

The second half opened completely opposite of the first half. In the 47th minute Marissa Castellano had a fantastic shot on target that was saved by Golden Hawks goalkeeper Stepanie Brooks, and a second shot in the 51s minute from forward Stephanie Lamanna.

All of the Lions attempts paid off in the 56th minute when midfielder Kendra Saxton scored the opening goal with help from Lamanna. Not long after, Castellano scored the second goal with an assist from Kiyani Johnson to help the Lions secure the win.

With another win under the Lions belt, they add another game to their win streak and are now 6-1-4 on the season holding third spot in the OUA West Division, while the Golden Hawks drop to 1-7-3 just out of playoff positioning in seventh.

The Lions play their next game in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., against the Algoma Thunderbirds on Sunday at 1 pm.
