Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

LIONS DEFEAT BADGERS FOR FIRST WIN OF SEASON

The York University Lions men's hockey team continued their season on the road tonight, as they defeated the Brock Badgers 3-2 in St. Catharines, Ont.

Power plays proved vital in this matchup, with the first four goals coming off the help of an extra man. The Badgers got on the board early when defenceman Connor Walters put his side up by one within the first four minutes of the opening period. Lions forward Morgan Messenger would be quick to respond, pouncing on a rebounded shot from Jeremy Lucchini, knotting the game at one a piece heading into the first intermission.

The rest of the scoring came in the second frame. The Lions got their first lead of the game off another rebounded shot from Lucchini. This time Peter De Coppi was able to collect the puck, firing it past Badgers goaltender Mario Cavaliere, putting his side up by one. Not going away, the Badgers tied the score up at two a piece, thanks to a power play goal from second-year forward Adam Berg.

However, less than two minutes later, third-year forward Nik Coric slotted home the game winning-goal courtesy of an assist from Brendan Browne and Braydon Buziak, clinching the match, and giving the Lions their first win on the season.

Lions goaltender Mack Shields was impressive in this contest saving 29 shots, while Cavaliere made 22 saves.

The Lions will continue their season on the road when they play the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday night at 7:30pm at the Gryphon Centre. This will be their last road game before their home opener next Friday against the Ryerson Rams at Canlan at 7pm.
