The York University Lions men's hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to the Guelph Gryphons in its third straight road game to start the season.
The Gryphons dominated play for most of the first two periods, outshooting the Lions 26-13, but York rookie goaltender
Cole Ceci was up to the challenge as he made 25 saves in that stretch. The lone goal through the opening two frames came courtesy of Guelph's Giordano Finoro on a power play with 1:34 remaining in the first.
There was much more action in the third period, beginning with a second goal by the Gryphons just 69 seconds in. Mikkel Aagaard found the back of the net with assists to Todd Winder and Ryan Da Silva for a 2-0 lead for the home squad.
The Lions finally got on the board at 14:14 on a power play tally by
Nik Coric, with
Justin Bean and
Sal Filice earning assists on the play. The one-goal deficit did not last long, however, as Aagaard scored his second of the night to push the advantage to two again just a minute and a half later.
The Lions had a flurry of chances throughout the third as they recorded 14 shots, but they could not get the puck past Guelph goaltender Andrew Masters. He turned away 26 of the 27 shots he faced for the win, while Ceci finished with 37 saves in the loss.
The Lions will finally make their home regular-season debut next weekend when they welcome the Ryerson Rams and Queen's Gaels on Friday and Saturday nights, respectively. Puck drop is at Canlan Ice Sports at 7pm the first night and 7:15pm the second.
