On Friday, the No. 10 nationally ranked York University Lions women's soccer team battled against the No. 8 Western Mustangs and came back to tie the game with a final score of 1-1 on the road in London, Ont.
The tie keeps the Lions tied for second place in the OUA West Division with the Guelph Gryphons and they remain in contention to gain a bye in the first round of playoffs.
The game started pretty intense and action-packed from the first few minutes of the match. The Mustangs scored the opening goal scored in the first minutes of the game by midfielder Nikki Balachorek assisted by her teammate Nicola Panaccione.
The Lions weren't down for long, however, as they were eager to also get on the scoreboard. In the 21
st minute of the first half, forward
Kiyani Johnson scored the tying goal that kept the Lions' hopes alive. The first half remained energetic with the Lions trying to add another goal to the scoreboard before the end of the half but they did not prevail and the score remained tied at 1-1.
The Lions aimed to add another goal, but they were not able to. However, their efforts weren't in vain as they played fantastic defence and prevented the Mustangs from scoring in the second half.
The Mustangs finished the regular season atop the OUA West with an undefeated 10-0-4 mark, while the Lions are now 7-1-5. They'll need a win and either a draw or a loss by the Gryphons to earn the coveted second bye.
The Lions play their final game of the regular season at home this Sunday against the Windsor Lancers at 1pm.
