JOHNSON'S LATE GOAL LIFTS LIONS OVER MARAUDERS

The York University Lions women's soccer team came away with a nail biting 1-0 victory over the McMaster Marauders at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton, Ont.

It took 89 minutes for the Lions to break the deadlock, when captain Farkhunda Muhtaj delivered a deep ball intended for fourth-year forward Kiyani Johnson. The ball travelled down the far right side of the pitch, leading to a sprint between Marauders keeper Juliana Hifawi and Johnson. However, it was Johnson that reached the ball first, just outside the box, squeaking a shot past Hifawi and into an empty Marauders net.

In a rare Wednesday night matchup, every second clearly counted in this effort that could affect playoff positioning as the two sides came into this affair tied for fifth place in the OUA West Division.

Both sides goal lines saw little to no action in the first half. The best opportunity in the frame came from Lions defender Catherine Umolac whose shot went just wide off a piercing pass from Johnson in the 43rd minute.

As play progressed in the second, York earned four corner kicks in the span of eight minutes. Lions midfielder Haley Walsh was active in the box, heading two attempts on net. Hifawi made both saves keeping her side in it, until Johnson secured the game for her side.

Johnson's clinching goal in the dying minutes makes it her fifth goal so far this season, tying her for sixth in the OUA scoring race. After struggling to find the net early on, she's now accounted for five of the Lions last seven goals, making her the team's leading scorer.

The Lions now move up to fourth place in the OUA West Division with a 3-1-4 record and two games in hand, while the Marauders drop to sixth sporting a 3-4-1 record.

The Lions continue their season on the road as they play against the Brock Badgers this Saturday afternoon. The two teams tied 0-0 earlier in the season at Alumni Field. Kick-off for this match is set for 1pm in St. Catharines, Ont.
