NO. 3 LIONS REACH 50 GAME MILESTONE AFTER 1-0 WIN OVER LANCERS

On Sunday, the No. 3 nationally ranked York University Lions men's soccer team defeated the Windsor Lancers 1-0 at Alumni Field.

The win sees the Lions reach a historic 50 game milestone after going undefeated against OUA opponents since August 30th, 2017 – their last loss coming against the Guelph Gryphons, 2-1 at home. The momentous run includes two flawless playoff trips leading to back-to-back OUA banners, as well as a victory over the Carleton Ravens in the consolation finals at the U SPORTS Championship in 2017.

The first half of the match was goalless, but the game was anything but dull, with numerous shots taken on net. Forward Merci Yuma had plenty of great shots on target, but none of them reached the back of the net. Lancers goalkeeper Sebastien Lee-Daigle kept the score sheet clean, ending the half with a nil-nil tie.

In the second half the Lions were eager to get a goal on the board with an excellent shot on net from Jon Alec Duenas. Unfortunately, it was too high and bounced off the crossbar. The Lancers pounced back with a shot over their own on net that was quickly picked up by Lions goalkeeper Mike Argyrides.

Although the Lancers held their own against the No. 3 nationally ranked side, they stood no chance against forward Milan Beader who shot a wicked goal into the top right corner of the net in the 78th minute of the game to snap the Lions dry spell.

With their sixth win in a row, and first place in the OUA West division clinched, the Lions gain a bye and will play in the OUA quarterfinals on Sunday at Alumni Field. The time and their opponent will be determined following the first-round of playoff action on Wednesday.
