The York University Lions women's soccer team beat the Waterloo Warriors 3-0 in a thrilling game on home turf on Sunday evening.
The game started off with strong offensive attacks on both sides. The Warriors, who tied 1-1 with the Lions last they met early September, were able to get five shots on goal against the Lions who were able to shoot four of their own.
It was after a penalty was called on Waterloo that York's
Kalifornia Mitchell was able to take a penalty shot, which successfully gave the Lions their first goal of the game.
The Lions finished the first leading 1-0 against the visiting team.
In the second half, the Lions continued their strong offensive attacks. Their defense was also able to keep the net void of goals from the Warriors.
Five minutes into the second York midfielder
Joselyn Gagliardi got the crowd going. As she got hold of the ball just before half field, crossing through two Waterloo defenders, Gagliardi fired the ball into the right side of Waterloo's net, which marked her first goal of her York career and gave the Lions a 2-0 lead.
York's leading scorer and veteran
Kiyani Johnson did as she's been doing all season and scored another goal for the Lions and her sixth this season off a cross from
Catherine Umolac.
The win gives the Lions their third of the week, extending their unbeaten streak to nine games on the season.
The Lions are now in third place in the OUA West Division, inching closer to placing in the top two with a game in hand, which will only benefit them heading into playoffs.
The Lions will play the Laurier Golden Hawks this Friday at 11am at Alumni Field.
