The York University Lions women's basketball team secured their second win of the season after beating the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 74-39 on Friday night at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
The first quarter of the game saw the Lions take the shots needed to give them the big lead that carried them through the remainder of the game. York's
Megan MacLeod opened up the game with a two-pointer. The Blues then responded with two two-point shots from Florella Granda and Ellen Ougrinov, taking the lead to a momentary 4-2 for the Blues.
York's
Cyanna King was then able to throw down the shots to put the Lions back on the scoreboard and ahead of the Blues. King was able to block a pass from UofT and with an assist from
Emma Jonas, was able to score her first two points of the game, which were followed by two successful free throws after being fouled by UofT's Christine Jurcau.
The quarter also saw points from York guard
Katrina Collins-Samuels, who got four points in, as well as
Taylor McAlpine, whose three-point shot brought the Lions up 11-4, and
Alysha Pinck, who contributed a jump shot as well as a three. The Lions finished the quarter leading 20-8.
In the second quarter, the Lions continued to dominate the game. MacLeod opened firing the first eight points for the Lions, bringing them to a 30-8 lead within the first three minutes of the second. McAlpine also had a successful quarter, throwing down six points. For most of the quarter the Lions were able to block the Blues from producing points as they were only able to get eight points past the Lions.
It was in the third quarter when the Blues were able to produce the most points in a quarter during the game against the Lions as they were able to get from 16 points to 25 points, the Blues' Aja Quran with six of those points. It was in this quarter when York was able to see rookie
Jada Codrington begin to make the steals, passes and shots to help the Lions further their lead.
In the final quarter the Blues were able to get a two-pointer past the Lions in in the last three seconds of the game, which still wasn't enough to close the 35-point gap the Lions generated.
