The York University Lions women's basketball team played on the road on Saturday at the Guelph Gryphon Athletic Centre and were overpowered by the Gryphons with a score of 112-59.
The Lions were coming off of an intense two-game win streak with a lopsided win of their own against the Toronto Varsity Blues, and they were hoping to keep it going. Unfortunately, the Gryphons prevailed and handed the Lions their second loss of the season.
In the first quarter, the Lions were overcome by the Gryphons. They were not able to get a basket until the Gryphons were up by 11.
Megan MacLeod scored the first basket off of a jump shot. Despite the Lions putting baskets on the board, they were too far behind to Gryphons to come back to make it a close quarter and it ended 29-16 for the Gryphons.
The second quarter continued in the same fashion as the Gryphons continued to get three-point shots on the board. The Lions were playing hard and causing turnovers but weren't able to sink any buckets. The Gryphons took advantage and ended the second quarter with a score of 54-32 in their favour.
In the third, the Lions aimed to close the 22-point deficit and stay in the game but the Gryphons came out just as hard as they did in the first half and had their best offensive output of the game with 33 points. MacLeod scored the Lions first point of the half followed by a jump shot from
Katrina Collins-Samuels but Guelph continued to pull away.
In the final quarter of the game, the Lions defence picked up but once again, they were unable to sink any baskets and the Gryphons cruised to the victory.
Lauren Golding finished with a double-double, putting up team highs of 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Cyanna King chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
Six Gryphons scored in double figures on the night, led by Hanna Pryce with 20 points.
The Lions will look to get back into the win column when they play against the Laurier Golden Hawks at home at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Wednesday night at 6pm.
