On Sunday, the York University Lions men's basketball team suffered a narrow loss to the Waterloo Warriors 70-69 at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
Â
Both teams came out hard playing strong, resulting in a tie score early in the quarter. Lions
Prince Kamunga blocked, forced a turnover and scored a basket to help the Lions take an early lead, ending the first 21-13.
Â
The second quarter commenced, and the Warriors came back. The Lions were barely leading the Warriors, and the score closed to a score of 25-23. In the final minutes of the half, the Lions were hungry to maintain their lead with a three-pointer from Barrie native
Connor Laronde, which was followed by a Warrior's three-pointer from Cameron Penner. The half was neck and neck until the Lions turned over the ball, giving the Warriors an offensive push. Fortunately, Kamunga blocked their attempt, but the team fouled Warriors' Simon Petrov, giving him a basket and a foul ending the half 29-28 for the Warriors.
Â
In the third quarter, the Lions came close to gaining the lead. However, the Warriors had other plans as they continued to score basket after basket. The Lions struggled defensively and the Warriors took full advantage as they started to pull away with the lead 38-28. The Lions finally got their first basket of the third from
MJ Forbes, but the Warriors continued to dominate, taking the quarter 56-31.
In the final quarter, Lions forwardÂ
Nicolas Duncan secured a basket and a foul, and the Lions started to gain momentum for the first time in the half. The Warriors looked to be too far ahead to make a substantial impact until the Lions began to monopolize off of the Warriors' mistakes. Within the final minutes of the game, Lions guardÂ
DeAndrae Pierre hit a three-pointer to help his side come back as the score narrowed down to 64-65, giving the Lions their first lead of the half. With 13 seconds left on the clock, Pierre hit a jump shot putting the Lions up 69-68. But the Warriors would not go away. With points of a second remaining, Warriors guard Nedim Hodzic nailed a jump shot ultimately sealing the game for the visitors. The lions managed to get the ball in a last-ditch attempt to win the game, but unfortunately fell shot on an alley-op play as the clock run out.
Kamunga totaled 19 points in the game, while Pierre dropped 12 points of his own. Forbes added nine of the bench.

The Lions play their next game this Friday against the Toronto Varsity Blues at 2 pm at the Goldring Centre.
