The York University Lions men's volleyball team beat the Brock Badgers 3-2 on Saturday afternoon, giving the Lions their second win of the season.
It was the fifth set that secured the win for the Lions. The Badgers opened up with four points in a row, taking an early 4-0 lead against York. York's
Andrew Shotbolt shot down the Badgers' streak by throwing down a kill, finally putting the Lions on the scoreboard. By the mid-way point, the Badgers were leading 8-6.
Coming back from the mid, York's
Andrew Tauhid, the top scorer of the game with 16 points, was able to contribute four points in the set -- three kills and one block -- which helped launch the Lions ahead to a score of 12-9. The Badgers were then able to add another four points, which brought the game to a close 14-13 and York's
Andriy Sozanskyy, who contributed a total of 10.5 points this game, finished off the final round with a kill to give the Lions the win over the Badgers.
The Badgers opened up the series by taking the first set by two points. This, however, seemed to provide the Lions with the momentum needed to take the following set of the series where York beat Brock 25 -18. York's Sozanskyy was able to provide another four points for the Lions -- three of them kills and one of them a big block -- early in the set.
The Lions also battled it out in the third set. York's
Grant Lynch had three blocks and
Dan Everton had six assists and one block. By the end of the third, the Lions were leading the series 2-1.
The Badgers then took the fourth set of the game, winning it by a total of 14 points. The Lions and Badgers were then tied 2-2, which extended the game to the fifth set which the Lions ultimately took 15-13.
The Lions are now 2-1 and will be taking on the McMaster Marauders on Friday at 8pm at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
