The No. 6 nationally ranked York University Lions women's hockey team fell to the Waterloo Warriors 4-1 at home on Friday night, snapping their seven-game win streak.
Â
The Warriors got on the board early in the second period after a quiet first. Selena Dirven broke the deadlock off an assist from Warriors forward Brooklyn Cole. The Lions, however, had plenty of chances of their own on shot attempts from fourth-year
Taylor Davison and forward
Courtney Gardiner, but the Warriors managed to keep their lead. 12:10 into the period Warriors second-year Jessie Fennell split the Lions defence with a leading pass to her teammate Taytum Clairmont who put her side up by two.
Â
Despite the score, the Lions dominated in the third period, outshooting the visitors 12-7. Only 1:17 into the frame, York picked up their first goal of the game from Gardiner who tallied her fifth goal of the season. The goal ranks her tied for second in the OUA scoring race. Putting the pressure on the Warriors, the Lions looked poised to tie the game. But 12:18 into the period the Warriors added another off a bouncing puck in front of a cluster of Warriors that was tipped past Lions goaltender
Lauren Dubie, and all but assured the Warriors win.
Â
An empty net goal for Clairmont's second sealed it for the visiting team, as they are now 5-3-1-0 on the season. Warriors netminder Alysha Letwin made 24 saves for her side in the win, Dubie recorded 14 saves.
Â
The loss snaps the Lions impressive seven game win streak, their best streak since winning six in a row from Nov. 8th-28th, in 2009. They are now 7-2-0-0 on the season and are still tied for first in the OUA.
Â
The Lions will return to the ice at home on Saturday night to host the Windsor Lancers at Canlan. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:15pm.
